JUGOLINIJA MAY SUSPEND SERVICE TO MIDDLE EAST

The independent shipping line Jugolinija is considering suspending its service from the United States to the Middle East, a company official said.

Jugolinija is the largest carrier in that trade that sets its rates independently of the conference structure.The high and volatile cost of war insurance prompted Jugolinija to rethink its operations, according to Alfred Themel, Jugolinija's U.S. representative in New York.

He added he believes the carrier is not making money on the trade, although he does not have complete data.

He said officials of the carrier, based in Rijeka, Yugoslavia, are

discussing this week whether to discontinue operating on the trade. Most other carriers serving the U.S.-Middle East route belong to a rate-setting group, or conference, called the "8900" Lines. Independent lines generally have lower prices than conference members.

It is not clear which ports might be affected, and Mr. Themel declined to discuss Jugolinija's plans in detail. However, Jugolinija's service to the Mediterranean, which is served by the same vessels, probably would remain unchanged.

On Wednesday the line was not accepting bookings to the Red Sea or Persian Gulf after March 10. Jugolinija already had reduced service to the region, ending direct shipments and employing smaller vessels.

Two larger vessels Jugolinija used on the route have been leased out to Maersk Line and Sea-Land Service Inc. for short periods.

The Sarejevo was chartered by Sea-Land for one or possibly more round trips on its U.S.-Mediterranean service.

The Zagreb was chartered by Maersk for one circuit on its Europe-Far East run. Each ship has a capacity of the equivalent of 1,700 20-foot containers, or TEUs.

The executive vice president of Jugolinija's U.S. agent, New York-based Crossocean Shipping Co., was in Yugoslavia this week to discuss the situation.

Mr. Themel said the line is "considering all possibilities." One option is to reduce capacity on the route. "Instead of taking 900 (20-foot containers), maybe we would take 200 or 300," he said.

Cargo probably would be transferred to smaller vessels at Mediterranean ports for shipment to the Persian Gulf. The practice, known as a feeder service, can reduce insurance costs.

The Middle East trade is not currently considered a great profit-maker

because of the war's effect on insurance, fuel and other costs.

Nevertheless, industry sources agreed it would be a strange time to withdraw from the trade. Commercial demand for cargo space has been stable, and is expected to boom after the war as reconstruction begins.

"If the war stops, business to the Middle East will be tremendous," said Herb Heilpern, president of H. & H. Shipping of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.

"It's strange they're pulling out," Mr. Heilpern said, adding that the situation probably was prompted by internal difficulties at Jugolinija. H. & H. Shipping is the line's largest customer on the trade.

Dali je ovo greska na kraju teksta ili su tri broda bila prvo dodjeljena u Jug. slobodnu plovidbu?

Po meni su 1947. godine osnovana 4 brodara i to : Jugoslavenska linijska plovidba, Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba, Jadranska linijska plovidba i Jadranska slobodna plovidba.
Jugoslavenska linijska p. i Jugoslavenska slobodna p. su se naknadno spojile u Jugoliniju (meni je takvo sjećanje na tekst napisan u monografiji Jugolinije sa početka 70tih godina).

Isto tako se spominje da je Jadroplov nastao od jedne od ovih kompanija sa sjedištem u Rijeci. Možda je on nastao od Jadranske slobodne plovidbe, a kasnije je netko to pobrkao. Trebalo bi provjerit tekstove koji to obrađuju i napisati točno ... Ja sad pišem napamet jer mi knjige i monografije nisu pri ruci ...

Ovdje je samo pitanje da netko moze potvrditi dali su brodovi na kratko bili u slobodnoj pa brzo prebaceni u linijsku ili je ovo samo novinarska pogreska.

Piše li šta u onoj monografiji iz 70tih ? Ja se sad ne mogu prisjetiti ! Spominju li se tamo zasebno brodovi ? Ako da, ja bi vjerovao tome podatku, više nego li jednom članku.
Kasniji osvrti i pisanja na te početke ne pridavaju toliko pažnje na razlike između Jug. linijske p. i Jug. slobodne p., a pitanje je i koliko su administrativno, a koliko praktično bile same za sebe. To bi trebalo pitati nekog starijeg, koji ima vlastita sjećanja iz rada u tim počecima (ako još ima takvih). Moj je nono prije rata plovio na brodovima Oceanije i po završetku rata vratio se iz Egipta, te se već 1946. godine ukrcao na Korduna (koji prije rata nije bio u floti Oceanije) i na tome brodu dočekao 20.01.1947. osnivanje brodarskih poduzeća.

D'večer, Moderatoru i Zokiju,
nekoliko puta pročitao sam sve o osnivanju Jugolinije u Monografiji (1973.g)  od stranice 57 do 65, gdje je jedino sigurno da su brodovi Šabac (1947),Bosna,Topusko i Vis (1948) kao ratna reparacija ušli direktno u sastav flote Jugoslavenske linijske plovidbe. Nejasno je i koje je brodove Ministarstvo pomorstva Jugoslavije ukidanjem Jugoslavenske slobodne plovidbe (1949) prenijelo u sastav Jugoslavenske linijske plovidbe. Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba  spojena je s Jugoslavenskom linijskom plovidbom   23.12.1950.g. u jedno poduzeće pod nazivom Jugoslavenska linijska plovidba ili skraćeno Jugolinija.  Tek u tom rješenju navodi se prvi put skraćeno ime Jugolinija, iako je ime  JUGOLINIJA, udomaćeno još od 20.siječnja 1947.
